Don't Count Down, Count Up!
Counting Up, Not Down: Reflecting on Your Semester as a School Leader
As we approach the much-anticipated two-week winter break, it's easy to get caught up in the countdown—only a few days left days until you can (finally) exhale. But instead of counting down the days, what if we shifted the focus to counting up? Counting up all the moments, milestones, and achievements that defined your first semester. This simple mindset shift can help you reflect, recalibrate, and reset with purpose, positioning you for a stronger second semester.
Why Counting Up Matters
Counting down is rooted in anticipation, often with a hint of exhaustion. But counting up shifts our mindset to gratitude, accomplishment, and preparation. It reminds us of how far we’ve come, even in the chaos, and gives us a clearer vision of where we need to go.
By counting up, you honor your efforts and the impact you’ve had—on your staff, students, and school community. And when you take stock of your wins and lessons learned, you build the foundation for a more intentional, strategic approach to the second semester.
7 Things School Leaders Should Count Up Before the Break
Take a few moments this week to reflect on these key areas of your leadership. How many of these can you count up and celebrate?

- How many hard conversations did you navigate with care and respect?
2. Classroom Observations
- How many classrooms have you visited?
- What trends did you notice in instruction, engagement, or culture?
- How have you used those observations to provide meaningful feedback?
3. Positive Culture Moments
- How many team celebrations have you led?
- How have you modeled positivity, empathy, and grace to your staff?
- What strides have you made toward fostering a cohesive, healthy culture?

- How has student behavior improved or been redirected under your leadership?
- What are your school’s academic or extracurricular wins this semester?
5. Leadership Team Development

- How many responsibilities have you effectively delegated?
- What new processes or systems have you implemented to empower your team?
6. Time Protected for Instructional Leadership

- How has your leadership impacted classroom practices and teacher growth?
7. Moments of Personal Growth

- What feedback have you received, and how are you using it to improve?
From Reflection to Reset
As you count up your wins, you might also notice the gaps. Perhaps there were moments when you wished you had more time, clarity, or support to achieve your goals. These insights are just as valuable. They highlight areas where you can shift your focus or ask for help to lead with more ease and efficiency in the second semester.
