Hey, leading ladies!

EDUCATOR | EXECUTIVE COACH | SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONSULTANT | AUTHOR | KEYNOTE SPEAKER

I am a woman created to serve. Born and raised in Detroit, I started my journey as an educator at a young age. After obtaining my degree in education from Alabama A&M University, I set my sights on transforming my stomping grounds - the Detroit school system - one classroom at a time.

Early on, I realized my talent, skill, and unwavering passion for education would suffer if I didn’t take advantage of other opportunities. As a middle-grades teacher, I wanted to impact more than just 30 lives at a time. So, I set my sights on leadership.

But first, I had to earn it.

My strategy was to embody every pillar of authentic leadership. This approach earned me a promotion to a New Teacher Coach. In this role, I supplied teachers with the best practices and instructional data to support their journey in education.

My methods were so successful that I was approached in 2007 to open a new school in Detroit and take on the role of Assistant Principal.

After six successful years of building strong teams of instructional leaders, I took on the most rewarding yet challenging role of my career.

I accepted a position as the principal of a school with everything going against it:

  • The students were uninspired and academically unprepared compared to their peers.
  • The teachers were burnt out and unmotivated due to a lack of support.
  • The parents were frustrated with leadership and uninterested in taking action in their child’s school.
  • And the state had labeled it a bottom eight school and was on the verge of giving up on it completely.

It was up to me to take everything I knew and put it into action.

I saw the potential and the promise of this school. And with the proper framework, I knew transformation was possible. So, I did what I do best…

I reset the standards to reclaim excellence in everyone on the school grounds.

I knew that if it wasn’t good enough for my children, it wasn’t good enough for anyone’s children. That was my driving force to lead differently and do everything I could to transform the fate of this institution with so much potential.

It took time, but eventually, the hard work paid off.

We became a Reward School by the State of Michigan and received the Parent Satisfaction Award, Employee Engagement Award, and the School of Excellence Award. After ten years of transformative work, they awarded me the prestigious Michigan Administrator of the Year Award in 2017.

It was an incredible achievement for my staff and students!

Even with my success, I knew my journey in leadership was not over. What became clear to me was that I was being called to make an even bigger impact.

What’s the point of being Principal of the Year if you’re not helping others learn how you got there?

That’s why I created Principal Patterson Leadership Services.

I wanted women to have a proven framework to help them transition into leadership roles with the proper guidance and preparation. To date, PPLS has helped countless women become instructional coaches, assistant principals, principals, and school district leaders.

An important note

While Coach Patterson is on fire for education, she also has a deep passion for other things…

Like filling her closet and home with new buys as a self-diagnosed shopaholic and jet-setting to destinations worldwide. She loves to meet and befriend other queens in leadership whenever she’s out and about. And when she’s not teaching educators how to become sought-after school and district leaders, you can catch her relaxing in her Michigan home with her wonderful husband and three amazing boys.
